Action of Trivalent Chromium on Rat Liver Structure. Histometric and Haematological Studies International Journal of Morphology
Silva,Rogério Ferreira da; Lopes,Ruberval A; Sala,Miguel A; Vinha,Dionísio; Regalo,Simone C. H.; Souza,Ana Maria de; Gregório,Zita Maria de O.
The trace mineral trivalent chromium (Cr3+) is an essential nutrient involved in the regulation of carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism via an enhancement of insulin action. The present work had as objective to characterize histopathologically and histometrically the hepatic alterations of female Wistar rats, determined by the chromium III administration in drinking water. Adult rats received ration and drinking water ad libitum containing 300 or 500 mg/l chromium III during 4 months. Control animals received only water and ration. All animals were sacrificed by lethal dose of anesthetic. Samples of liver were fixed in 10% formalin for 24 h. Tissues for microscopical pathology were processed using standard procedures. Paraffin sections prepared at 6...

Estudio Morfológico e Histoquímico de las Glándulas Cefálicas de Bothrops alternatus (Ophidia, Viperidae) International Journal of Morphology
Parpinelli,Ana Carolina; Lopes,Ruberval A; Sala,Miguel A; Issa,João Paulo M; Lopes,Túlio Roberto V. P.

Guiraldelli,Michel Farchi; Lopes,Ruberval A; Sala,Miguel A; Lopes,Túlio Roberto V. P.

MORPHOLOGICAL AND MORPHOMETRIC ALTERATIONS INDUCED BY VALPROIC ACID ON RAT FETUSES' MECKEL'S CARTILAGE, LINGUAL MUSCULATURE, AND SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND International Journal of Morphology
Siéssere,Selma; Semprini,Marisa; Lopes,Ruberval A; Sala,Miguel A; Mattos,Maria G. C.
Valproic acid, an antiepileptic drug, is a well-known teratogenic agent; its main target organ is the neural tube, though organ malformations have also been described. The aim of the present work was to analyze the effects of valproic acid on embryo/fetal oral structures: Meckel's cartilage, muscles of the tongue, and submandibular gland. Rats received a intraperitoneal injected of Valproic acid (300mg/Kg) on the 10th day of their gestation. Females were sacrificed on day 20 post coitus, and fetuses were examined. No gross malformations were observed. The following morphological alterations were observed: lower body and placental weight; shorter umbilical cord length; submandibular gland parenchyma less differentiated with larger cellular cord and terminal...

PHENYTOIN ACTION IN THE LINGUAL MUCOSA OF RAT FETUSES: MORPHOMETRIC STUDY International Journal of Morphology
Siéssere,Selma; Semprini,Marisa; Lopes,Ruberval A; Azoubel,Reinaldo; Sala,Miguel A; Mattos,Maria G. C; Hallak Regalo,Simone Cecílio.
Phenytoin (diphenylhydantoin, dilantin) has been the chosen anti-convulsive for the treatment of sudden disorders since the late 1930's. Several epidemiological and clinical studies in human beings showed an increase in malformations in descendants of which mothers took phenytoin during gestation, such as cranio-facial development and growth abnormalities, distal phalangeal hypoplasia, and light or moderate mental deficiency. This work had the goal to study the lingual mucosa, under histopathological and morphometric standpoints, in rat fetuses which were given an intraperitonial injection, consisting of a unique dose of phenytoin (70 milligrams/kilogram of their weight). Being that, we included the examined material in paraffin, 6 micrometers thick, and...

Transmission Electron Microscopy Study of the Neonatal Rat Tongue Mucosa Treated with Special Attention to the Bacteriae on the Epithelial Cell Membrane International Journal of Morphology
Picoli,Lara Cristina; Lopes,Ruberval A; Semprini,Marisa; Sala,Miguel Angel; Ogawa,Koichi; Watanabe,Ii-sei.
The epithelial cell surfaces of neonatal Wistar rat tongue mucosa were examined by transmission electron microscopic method. The tissues were fixed by modified Karnovksy solution and embedded in Spurr resin. Thin sections of 90 nm thickness were cut and examined in the Jeol 1010 transmission electron microscopy. It was revealed that the queratinized squamous epithelial cells of the tongue mucosa exposed to cadmium presented groupings of numerous bacteriae which are attached to the flat cell membrane surfaces. The coccus and bacillus are attached to the cell membrane in organized rows or at random, as clearly seen in the TEM images. At high magnification, the transmission electron microscopic images showed that bacteriae are attached by a fibrillar...
